What should a good internet content filter do?

February 22, 2008 13:30

Internet content filters are an excellent way to give access to only some users to the whole of the internet, while creating blocks for users that should not be surfing different internet channels. If you have children you are probably pretty aware of what the internet can have in store from them. An internet content filter can help you by stopping a child seeing anything they aren’t supposed to. Are you an employer that allows employees to work online? Get them more focused on their work and off the internet with the special features that can be found in this type of software.

These internet content filters can be found in many different shapes and sizes. Most all internet filters should contain pop-up blockers and spam filters. Many of the basic software also include firewalls to stop any incoming traffic that shouldn’t be entering your computer. However, the extras that some internet content filters have are not the same as the next.

For nearly all applications, whether for children at home and school, or the big boys and girls with their suits at the office, the internet content filter you choose should have keyword filtering. You provide a set of keywords, much software with this feature already comes with a very expansive list, and if that term is ever searched, all results will be blocked. If the keyword ever appears on a page, that page might be flagged as inappropriate for whatever the reason that keyword is not allowed. Logging of these attempts should also be a feature, as it will allow you to track the who’s, what’s, where’s, and when’s of why the keyword was searched.

Keeping your kids safe online is no easy task. They are constantly growing and learning as the internet is literally shaping the society for the future of children. They have access to millions and millions of pages of information with a few strokes of their keyboard. Unfortunately, there are people out there who also have access to them. Getting internet content filters that have chat and keystroke logging is a good option that you may want to tick. This will allow you to see who is chatting with your children and what they are saying to one another. Don’t let your children get dragged into a trap by someone who is just pretending to be their friend.

Many mangers do not realize the high importance of installing Internet content filtering software in their company. But, thinking about the many advantages this kind of solutions have to offer they  should think that it is the time to stop the employees from downloading applications, audio-video files and browsing unproductive websites.

There are a multitude of other important qualities that one will want to examine when purchasing internet content filtering software. Some of the latest software offer image recognition programs that will blog inappropriate images. Whatever it may be, make sure you know what your needs are when buying an internet content filter.

I recommend both accountability (monitoring) software, especially for adults, and filtering software.

Covenant Eyes Monitoring software isn't like a filter; it simply monitors where a user goes on the Internet. Covenant Eyes creates detailed Internet-usage reports of every single URL visited. These reports cannot be edited or erased (like a computer's Internet history) because all the information is housed by our servers. We also have an up-to-date scoring system that rates sites based on content and includes those numbers on the report. We have many families who use our service that are able to tell where exactly their children are going and when.

I invite you to go to www.covenanteyes.com" rel="nofollow">www.covenanteyes.com and enter promocode 'onefree' to receive a free 30 day trial of the program. That promo code is open to anyone who wants it!

Content filters do not inherently keep anyone safe. Blocking popups and spam is a great feature, but they don't stop young people from making poor decisions. Education about good decision making, interacting with strangers, and dealing with emotionally-troubling situations are what kids need help with. The computer is very secondary, as kids who are in trouble will find a way to get into more trouble online. Remember that your filter only works on the computer system you install it on. Kids can be at the library, a friend's house, a cell phone, etc.

You're much better off focusing on the child's needs and raising them to make the best decisions possible.
